D is for Dinosaur Island

05 Apr

Off the coast lies a tropical island shrouded by mist. The coastline is mostly sheer cliffs of black stone, and the few natural harbours are difficult to traverse due to treacherous reefs. This is an island rich in natural resources, and said to once have been home to the tribe known as the Ssi’ruk, snake-men that worshipped a devil that held the secret to immortality.

Plains

Scrubland, a thick forest, and fast flowing rivers. A swamp marks the border of the jungle to the East, a line of rocky wastes and hills to the North leads to the desert, and the mountains loom in the distance. Tribes of nomadic primitive men roam the grasslands, along with dinosaurs of various types.

Encounters (check three times a day; 1 in 6 chance):

  1. Nomads out hunting (2d6 cavemen, armed with spears and clubs)
  2. Dinosaur, large herbivore (2d4)
  3. Dinosaur, small herbivore (2d8)
  4. Dinosaur, Triceratops (1d6)
  5. Dinosaur, Tyrannosaurus Rex (1)

Encounters (check three times a day; 1 in 6 chance):

  1. Dinosaur, Pterodactyl (1d4)
  2. Dinosaur, medium carnivore (1d4)
  3. Oasis (fresh water, check for encounter every 3 hours if camp is made)
  4. Herd of camels (2d6)

  6. Remains of a hot-air balloon and a dead goblin pilot;
  7. Caecilia (1), lurking under the sand (4 in 6 surprise)
  8. Group of Man-Scorpions,  hunting lizards (2d6)

Mountains

A long ridge of mountains dominated by active volcanoes in the centre. Some tribes of primitive men live here, as do savage dwarves and goblins. A lonely dragon lives in the crook of one of the volcanoes.

Encounters (check three times a day; 1 in 6 chance):

  1. Baboon, rock (2d6; 25% of having crude clubs)

A thick jungle of wild apes, dinosaurs, and the de-evolved descendants of the Ssi’ruk snake-men. Ruins lurk in the jungle, hidden by the thick foliage. Somewhere in these ruins, it is said, lies the secret to eternal life.

  7. Ssi’ruk shaman (1, as mystic) and escort (2d4, as hunters, but armed with swords and shields, scavenged from victims)
  8. Hydra, six heads (1)

Badlands

A dead forest, wastelands seemingly devoid of life, and hills that always are covered in fog; this landscape is sinister and foreboding. Even the largest, fiercest dinosaurs avoid this land.

Notes:

All monsters are taken from the D&D Cyclopedia, but I am sure you have versions in whichever game you are playing.
