  1. Costs and Times of Keep Maintenance

Maintaining the Keep requires some expenditure of silver, plus the servants doing the work. Without either, the state of the Keep slowly deteriorates.

The yearly cost to maintain the Keep is equal to 1d10% of the value, or 1d6% with an accountant on the payroll. The value of the Keep at the start of the campaign is 90,000 silver pieces.

If the upkeep of the Keep is not paid, then every month the Morale of all retainers drops by one, and a check is made to see if they leave for better prospects elsewhere. In addition, armour and weapons will be poorly looked after, with the result that a roll of a natural 1 in combat means that a weapon breaks or blunts, or armour suffers damage from wear and tear.

Any damage dealt to the Keep can be repaired, given the tools, raw materials and manpower. As a general rule, repairs costs 10% to 60% of the normal monthly cost, but is in addition to the basic upkeep. It takes at least 1d4 weeks to make any repairs, less a day for every labourer, craftsman or suitable retainer at work.

To summarise Yearly costs Average per year Average per month
with Accountant 1d6% of 90,000 sp 2700 sp 225 sp
without Accountant 1d10% of 90,000 sp 4500 sp 375 sp
  1. Salaries of Men-at-Arms & Servants

The wages of the initial men-at-arms and servants is as below: if they are not paid every month, then make a check against their Morale, with a penalty of 1 for every month past payment; on a failed check, they leave. Even on a success they will moan and grumble, and their Morale suffers as a result; lower it by one point until they have been paid what they are owed.

Other wages for newly hired retainers is as per the normal rules.

Retainer Monthly Wage
Butler 150 sp
Cook 70 sp
Smith 100 sp
Maid, Stable boy 56 sp
Men-at-Arms 100 sp each

  1. Restocking Supplies

To restock basic equipment, replacement tools and goods such as fuel for the fire, as well as rations and ingredients for cooking, the monthly cost is 10 sp per PC and retainer in the Keep (so, for a party of five PCs and including the 17 retainers, it comes to 220 sp per month).

Characters (PCs or retainers) can forage for food, with a base 2 in 6 chance of success on the lands around the Keep. Each success gathers 1d4 days worth of rations; water is freely available from the well in the courtyard, which provides clean and fresh water all year.

If food is scarce, then those retainers who go without suffer a penalty of 1 to their Morale for every day that passes, and need to make a check against it at the end of a week. If it fails, they leave. On a success they will head off to hunt for food, but return with what they find and share it out.

For any additional supplies, to replace lost items, or for new general equipment, weapons, armour and the like, normal costs apply.

The Grand Vizier will take an order every time he pays a visit, with the goods being delivered in 1d4 weeks, unless they are needed urgently; in which case they will either appear in 1d6 days, or next day if an extra payment is made, equal to 10% of the total value of the goods (to cover the Grand Vizier’s expenses, including recovery of implements and foci needed for his acts of magic).
