Survival Game

22 Jul

If you were going to design a game (or setting) that dealt with survival in a post-apocalyptic world, what elements would you say best fit the genre? And what sort of rules mechanics would you need?

It kind of depends on the particular apocalypse, but wilderness survival and travel are pretty useful in all versions. Technology could get coverage in how well it survives the loss of an expert knowledge base. Salvaging materials from ruins. Infrastructure elements such as power production, depending on the tone you want to take.

Is this going to be all Gamma World over-the-top or Morrow Project/Twilight 2000 realistic?

I’m thinking mostly realistic, but with an element of weird (think HP Lovecraft survival horror, or something like that). Abstract and simple rules.

Resource management, emotional deterioration, radiation sickness (depending on your apocalypse of choice), scavenging.

Emotional deterioration is one I hadn’t considered, but definitely needs to be added to my list.
