Dynamic Lairs: Beetles

25 Jul

“A dynamic lair is a small dungeon or lair, created in advance like a point of interest, which includes 1-3 encounters.” ACKS page 236.

Continuing the series of Dynamic Lairs. Last week was the Giant Bee; this week, Beetles. Like the bears, this covers the different types of beetles.

The Smouldering Cave

A small entrance leads into a dank cave, wherein a nest of Fire Beetles have made their home. Their glow makes it look like a dying fire is inside the cave, attracting the unwary to their peril.

Beetle, Fire x 4 [AC5, Move 120' (40'), HD 1+2, hps 9, 9, 3, 3, #ATS 1 (bite), Dmg 2d4, SV F1, ML -1, AL N, XP 15; glow 10' radius, lasts 1d6 days if removed; ACKS page 156].

The Grassy Knoll

A mound of grassy earth shelters a pit covered by an overhang if turf, in which is a nest of Bombardier Beetles. The ground around the pit is scored with acid burns.

Beetle, Bombardier x 8 [AC 5, Move 120' (40'), HD 2, hps 8, 8, 11, 3, 10, 8, 7, 12, #ATS 1 (bite), Dmg 1d6, SV F1, ML 0, AL N, XP 20; spray acid 5', opponents at -2 attack for 1 day unless healed; ACKS page 156].

The Forest Glade

A serene glade in a forested region is in fact hiding a nest of dangerous Tiger Beetles, that lair beneath a willow tree by a trickling stream of cold, refreshing water.

Beetle, Tiger x 6 [AC 6, Move 150' (50'), HD 3+1, hps 13, 15, 16, 13, 8, 6, #ATS 1 (bite), Dmg 2d6, SV F1, ML +1, AL N, XP 65; ACKS page 156].
