Against the Giants: Session Twenty-Eight

18 Sep

18th to 24th Reaping 591 CY (high summer)

Corvin drinks the potion of gaseous form and flies off in the growing darkness.

Blending in well with the smoke from the giants’ fire, he investigates the three caves: but they are just shallow caves, just large enough to fit a sleeping giant and some personal belongings: sack of mixed coins and silver nuggets, a harp in one cave, crude beds, and nothing else.

Back outside, where the chests and other items were, Corvin can tell they are pretty mundane cooking implements, firewood, rations, nothing valuable.

Corvin can speak giant, so he listens in on the three giants: they are called Mot, Tell and the female giant is Shurin; they are guards of this ‘waystation’, waiting for the tribute caravan to arrive. They are then going to wait for the giants of Clan Sakhut to come and pick the tribute up. He also learns that these giants are expecting to be replaced at the end of the next month, from others of their clans.

He reports back to the others, and after lengthy discussions they decide to wait until the caravan turns and see what happens. Three days pass, the caravan– 10 wagons, 12 orc guards led by two champions and a half-orc leader, 2 ogres and a hill giant– arrives and unloads the tribute, then turns round and heads back to Tika Town. They party watches them go, keeping hidden in the crook of a nearby hill, using a spyglass to keep an eye on the enemy. As night falls, they decide to risk going up against the giants: three 20′ tall cloud giants.

They wait until evening when two of the giants head off to their caves to sleep, leaving one on guard. The party spilt up and hide in the surrounding trees, unseen. Halmary casts Silence on Corvin, who quaffs a portion of their Invisibility potion, and climbs over the walls of the stockade protecting the fort. He sneaks past the guard, into the first cave and manages to quick easily slit the giant’s throat. He watches him die, in silence, then takes another quaff of the potion and moves to the next cave: inside he once again manages to kill the giant, slitting its throat and watching it try to call for help… it dies crawling towards the entrance, in utter silence.

Corvin quickly climbs back out and heads to join Idni up the tree. There, the explorer lets loose with one of the Arrows of Giant-Slaying, but the missile bounces off the clothing of the giant, who looks up in surprise; thus allowing Idni to let off another shot, with another Arrow of Slaying (they have three… had three): and this one flies true, and the last giant falls to the floor, dead!

Amazed that everything worked out, they enter the fort and from the various crates, chests, boxes and sacks of the tribute, they load up their horses and mules with uncut gems and semi-precious stones, and chests full of silver. Zarkov suggests smashing up the rest of the tribute, and Ungrid hacks away at the crates of pottery, slashes rolls of cloth and silk, and generally makes a mess. Then Ungrid and Zarkov drag the female giant away, burying her in the hills; hoping that it will look like she slew the others and stole the valuable gems.

Then, loaded with loot, they make their way back to their cave headquarters, more wealthy than they ever thought they would be, and start making plans what to do with the 37,000 gold pieces worth of treasure they have stolen.

End of Session

Kills: 3 cloud giants.

Note: everyone levelled up thanks to the killing of the giants and the treasure they stole. Idni, Ungrid and Zarkov are all level 4; Halmary and Corvin are now level 5!
