In the lull after the second battle with the apes, as Corvin is bandaged up and made as comfortable as possible, Idni persuades the others that they need to finish off the apes while they are still able to. Before they go back inside, Halmary and Zarkov use their combined healing magic and skill to tend to the others’ wounds, and then Ungrid leads them back to the foot of the stairs to re-establish their now typical shield wall. There, Idni spies an ape lurking in the shadows cast by the flickering light that Halmary conjured up not too long ago. The explorer lets loose with an arrow, which misses, but the apes take notice and once again swarm from the shadows and attack.

With Halmary and Ungrid acting as the shield wall, and Idni and Zarkov behind with their spears, Corvin hangs at the back, using Zarkov’s crossbow to shoot as best as he can, passing it back to the dwarf to reload it. The fight is short and deadly, but not that many apes attack this time, and those that do are killed with only a few injuries suffered in return. The bodies of apes now litter the floor at the foot of the stairs, with others scattered around nearby. Less than ten feet away lies Corvin’s arm, still fresh and so far having avoided being trampled by the apes.

Now it all goes quiet, unsettlingly so, but Corvin hears the apes in the passages and warns the others. The party start to slowly advance, before Zarkov spots an ape hiding behind a pillar and manages to shoot it, temporarily taking the crossbow from the wounded thief. The rest of the apes now pour out of the corridors, but now quick enough, allowing the party to retreat back to the stairs and hold the line again. To give them an advantage, Halmary blesses the party and the swords, maces, spears and crossbow bolts start swinging and cutting, stabbing and flying, taking out the apes slowly but surely. Zarkov lobs another molotov, which falls short but still manages to splash a few of the apes. He follows this with a successful Hold spell, freezing two of the apes in place, and shifting the battle in their favour. The apes fight on, and fall quickly; one tries to flee, but Corvin manages to shoot it down.

And then the last apes falls to Ungrid’s sword, which also coincides with his 100th kill!

With the battle finally over and the apes seemingly all dead, the party catch their breath and plan their next move.
