Maps

08 Jan

Maps, especially hand-drawn ones, seem to be making the rounds on G+ at the moment. Thought I’d join in a bit with some of my more recent maps, taken from my– currently on-hold, perhaps permanently– City of Bones campaign.

Here is a collection of hand-drawn maps, from my notebook of maps and adventure notes (some of which you can see on the pages):

And here is a map of the city itself that I put together using Inkscape, which is how I do most of my maps, simply because my main gaming is on-line via Map Tools, and it is easier to create a suitable map on the computer than draw one, tidy it up, and make sure it fits with the software.

And, to finish off this somewhat lazy post, here are some other maps from the past couple of years:

Back to the City of Bones

03 Aug

After several weeks of non-gaming, we recommence the City of Bones campaign this Sunday. When we stopped, the small party of three were still in the catacombs, looking for a stone book.

In the meantime, I’ve been thinking of possible adventures, locations, and encounters that I can throw at them, and have started thinking along the lines of making it more about the factions and rival parties in the city, as opposed to delves and monster slaying (although they will still feature whenever the PCs venture into the catacombs or the chasm). Recent posts by other RPG-bloggers have helped shift my thoughts in that directions (posts such as Beedo’s Black City game; Monsters and Manuals post; a response to that post; and another response; and no doubt others that I’ve missed), and so I need to start thinking up stuff for the game on Sunday.

Current thoughts:

  • holy men looking to enlist PCs to ‘do in’ holy men of other religions;
  • various factions looking to steal relics (especially the bones of the gods), and wanting to hire someone to do the dirty work;
  • small, almost forgotten, religions looking to expand, and wanting devotees to swell their ranks;
  • thieves, cut-throats, and muggers;
  • rival adventuring parties;
  • corrupt officials, especially the city watch;
  • and so on.

I have introduced them to a ‘middle-man’ who I will use to offer them jobs, allowing me to seed adventures as necessary, depending on how much they want to get their hands dirty.

Anything else I can throw at them? Suggestions welcome.

City of Bones: Session 1 Highlights

02 Jul
Map of City

City of Bones

Yesterday we actually had a successful and enjoyable game in The City of Bones, with just three players. I’ll forgo a full report, and just highlight some of the events and fun that was had.

Character-wise we had Grey Fox (later renamed to Black Raven), a Level 1 Assassin; Jaqui Shit, a Level 1 Fighter, and a Level 1 Mage by the exotic name of Ish-Limina ack Choling ack Som, a somewhat timid spell-caster who follows a deity associated with colours.

It started off with them in a crowded street, rescuing a man who fell under a wagon as a cage holding a hippogriff broke free; Jaqui took the first kill of the game, by first driving the wagon and horses into the monster, and while it was being distracted by Ishi, she slew it with a spear to the head. Grey Fox proved your typical adventure, by robbing the man as he pulled him to safety. Said man bought a meal for saving his life, and offered them a job to retrieve a book from a crypt in a forgotten part of the catacombs.

So off they went. Highlights of the catacomb exploration:

  • Initially fleeing from giant centipedes then standing to fight and slaughter them;
  • Running away from a swarm of giant rats and barely escaping;
  • Crossing a trap of fire-spewing holes, getting burned until devising a plan (involving a shield, some rope, and pulling power) to cross it safely;
  • Bending some bars to enter an area that I hadn’t mapped out, but was prepared to wing it with my random catacomb generator, until the rats appeared;
  • A sliding ‘charge’ and throwing a spear, as Jaqui slew a fleeing fire beetle;
  • Checking for traps and secret doors, bypassing traps, all without rolling any dice.

Overall, a good game, and much better than the last one where everyone died.
