Monstrous Monday: Orange Spikes

29 Oct

MONSTROUS MONDAY!

Today is Monstrous Monday, as declared by Tim Brannan. Here then is my contribution, from my almost finished Lottery Dungeon adventure setting:

Orange SpikesOrange Spikes

These strange ‘monsters’ are really an alien fungus that feeds on decayed flesh, before releasing spores. They resemble balls of orange spikes, about the size of a human head, and bounce along in search of living beings: they then hurl towards them, intent on paralysing their victims and slowly excreting an acid that eats away at the flesh, allowing them to absorb the liquefying flesh.

% Lair None

Dungeon Encounter Flowering (2d6)

Wilderness Encounter None

Alignment Neutral

Movement 120’ (40’), plus charge 240’ (80’)

Armour Class 6

Hit Dice 3***

Attacks 1 (spikes)

Damage 1d8 plus paralysis

Save F3

Morale n/a

Treasure Type None

XP 95

These fungi begin combat by charging into their opponents, dealing double damage (2d8) on a successful hit, and forcing the target to make a save versus petrification or be knocked prone; a successful hit also causes paralysis for 2d6 turns, unless a further save versus paralysis succeeds. The fungi then sit attached to their prey, slowly digesting them, automatically dealing 1d6 acid damage per round; they can be easily removed, without harming the victim, but the fungus will try to reattach by attacking the following round.

Monster Monday: Serpent Tiger

22 Oct

Another Monstrous Monday!

Serpent TigerMonstrous Monday

A red-and-black striped tiger with a face that is a mass of writhing tentacles. It hunts its prey by sensing heat and movement, stalking as a prelude to pouncing. Its tentacles lash out at its prey, strangling it while its claws dig into the flesh and tear it to shreds, lapping up the blood through the hollow tips of the tentacles. The exsanguinated corpse is left for others to feed upon.

% Lair 40%

Dungeon Encounter Solitary (1) /Pride (1d6)

Wilderness Encounter Pack (1d6)/ Pride (2d6)

Alignment Chaotic

Movement 150’ (50’)

Armour Class 5

Hit Dice 7*

Attacks 3 (2 claws, tentacle)

Damage 1d8/1d8/strangulation

Save F7

Morale +1

Treasure Type I (incidental)

XP 790

On a successful hit with the tentacle, the opponent must make a saving throw versus paralysation or are strangled for 1d6 damage per round; the victim may make another save to break free, or the tentacle can be cut (hps 5, AC 5) although there is an equal chance of hitting the victim (as per firing into melee).

Serpent Tigers can sense movement and heat within a 60’ radius, and there is a 2 in 6 chance that the beast will stop to feast on a freshly killed corpse.

Monster Monday: Invisible Entity

15 Oct

Thought I’d join in with the Monday Monster theme:

Invisible Entity

Monstrous Monday

These invisible creatures, if seen, resemble a cross between an octopus and a crab, with claws and tentacles that allow it to move by undulating across the floor. They feed on fear and anger, and use their natural invisibility to foster such emotions.

% Lair None

Dungeon Encounter Solitary (1) / None

Wilderness Encounter None

Alignment Chaotic

Movement 120’ (40’)

Armour Class 2

Hit Dice 4**

Attacks 3 (2 claws, tentacles)

Damage 1d6/1d6 and strangulation

Save F2

Morale +2

Treasure Type None

XP 190

Naturally invisible (thus difficult to hit, all attacks against the Entity are at -4), these alien creatures feed on fear and rage, inducing such feelings by telepathy. Once per turn an Invisible Entity can cast Confusion (as the spell), and can cast Cause Fear every three rounds. If confronted and cornered, it will fight, using its claws and tentacles. If the tentacle hits, the target must save versus paralysation or be grappled, suffering 1d6 strangulation damage each round until a new save is made or the entity releases the victim (by killing it, or making it flee).

Against the Giants Update

26 Mar

Tonight will be the third session of the Against the Giants campaign. So far the party of five have dealt with some orcs, killed an ogre, and are now off to delve into a dungeon in the foothills of the surrounding mountains (the Crystalmist mountains to be exact), to see why the giants sent some orcs to secure it.

We’ve been using the Adventurer Conqueror King System (ACKS) and I have to say, that of all the retro-clones I have (which is most of them) this is the closest to how I remember playing the game. Altogether it does and has everything I want, and I am really liking how it plays. I especially like the whole Mortal Wound table, which is a nice expanded variation on the Death & Dismemberment tables out there. Two PCs have already gone down to 0 hit points, but both survived thanks to that table and a cleric with the healing proficiency (another good thing; sort of like feats, but without the excess or bonuses upon bonuses problem). One lost some fingers, the other merely went into shock.

I’ve also been enjoying building dungeons and settings with the core rules, and new classes (and races, coming in April) with the playtest versions of the Players Companion that reached its goal not long ago (I think that’s right). It has a nice inbuilt consistency to the rules, which allows the creation of everything to blend together pretty well, and so far it has been easy and even fun to do. Time consuming though, which is one of the reasons my posts have been few and far between of late. Slowly working on my Seven Kingdoms setting, which is getting fleshed out and added to during the A to Z of April blogs. Gives me a focus, which I sometimes need.

And because of the two recent Total Party Kills, I’m trying to avoid having any ghouls in my adventures at the moment; at least until I need to scare them :) , although with two clerics in the party, the threat of the undead is not as great as it was.
