September Challenge: Forfeited

14 Sep

I am giving up on the whole September Challenge. Honestly, my whole Tombs of the Naruth dungeon is rubbish, so I’m not carrying on with it.

Instead, I point you towards these posts/blogs that are doing a much better job:

Netherwerks

Tower of the Archmade

The Dwarven Stronghold

Dreams in the Lich House

And the start of it all, Asshat Paladins

Also, check out Jeff’s asteroids and his musings on skill checks.

September Challenge: Tombs of the Naruth: Room 10

12 Sep

Part of the September challenge.

Tombs of the Naruth

Room Ten: The Correct Chamber

Accessed via the door seen by closing your eyes, in room nine.

A smaller diamond room, with a lever in the centre. This is how the faithful gained access to room 12.

First Impressions

A small diamond of a room, with a large bronze lever protruding from the floor.

Further Observations

The lever is stiff but moves.

What’s Inside

Pulling the lever allows access to room 12. A deep grinding of gears sounds as it is pulled towards the entrance. If it is pushed back into place, room 12 seals itself.

More tomorrow.

September Challenge: Tombs of the Naruth: Room 9

11 Sep

Part of the September challenge.

Tombs of the Naruth

Room Nine: Eyes Shut Tight

Accessed via the circle-symbol door in room seven.

In this diamond chamber, the faithful show their blind faith.

First Impressions

This room is pitch black, the walls, floor and ceiling painted a deep black that absorbs the light.

Further Observations

If a light is brought or shone into the room, only the door to room 11 is visible.

If a character enters the room without a light and shuts their eyes, a ghostly imprint of the room appears to them, showing only the door to room 10.

The room is otherwise featureless.

What’s Inside

Two doors, only one visible at any time. The other can be detected as a secret door, and both open simply by pushing them.

More tomorrow.

September Challenge: Tombs of the Naruth: Room 8

10 Sep

Part of the September challenge.

Tombs of the Naruth

Room Eight: The Cleansing Fire

Accessed via the fire-symbol door in room seven.

In this trapezoid chamber, the faithful were purged of their sin by fire.

First Impressions

An elongated trapezoid with charred walls, floor and ceiling. At the far end is a symbol embossed on the floor, right in front of a statue of a dragon with its mouth wide open.

Further Observations

The symbol is a giant eye, open wide. The statue is copper, hollow and magical. It is hot to the touch and wisps of steam issue from the mouth.

What’s Inside

Anyone standing on the symbol hears a dull roar from inside the statue, and a round later, a jet of white-hot flame pours out of the dragon’s mouth, enveloping the person standing in the symbol; anyone closer than 10′ takes 1d4 damage (save versus breath to move back and avoid) from the heat.

The person standing, so long as they do not move, find the flames hot but painless; in fact, the cleansing fire cures any and all poisons, diseases and removes curses, magical and mundane.

However, if that person attempts to move out of the way, duck or doge aside, protect themselves in any way, then the fire burns them: 1d12 damage per level of the character, with a save versus breath weapon for half-damage. There is also a 2 in 6 chance that their armour is destroyed, and a 1 in 6 chance that any weapons or items carried are also melted or burned away (roll for each, or randomly pick 1d4 items).

The fire is triggered every time someone stands on the symbol, but it has to be a living person, not an object or an animal or construct.

More tomorrow.

September Challenge: Tombs of the Naruth: Room 7

09 Sep

Part of the September challenge.

Tombs of the Naruth

Room Seven: Hall of Choosing

Accessed via the door in room six.

This long corridor is where the faithful passed the tests to confirm their faith, for their ultimate transformation.

First Impressions

A long corridor with three doors: one of each side wall, one at the far end. The room is dry, with the flagstones engraved with images of eyes both open and sewn-shut.

Further Observations

The three doors are all stone, each bearing an icon imprinted on the doors in silver lines: the door to room 8 bears the image of a rising flame; the door to room 9 shows a circle, one coloured black, the other white; the last door, to room 12 shows a tentacled blob. This last door is locked, the others easily opened.

What’s Inside

The door to room 12 can only be unlocked by pulling the lever in room 10. It has no obvious lock to pick, although magical means may be used to open or bypass it.

More tomorrow.
